Do you have kids at home that will be starting school soon, or are already in school? Are you considering homeschool? If not, you should, at least a little bit. Here I have eight reasons why you should homeschool. Read on and consider this option.
- You have your kids best interest in mind. You are the one that has always cared for your child, loved your child, and protected your child. You will make the best choices for your children.
- You know your children. You have known your children since the day they were born. You know their personalities, their interests, and how they have learned everything; you know what your children need.
- You have been their teacher their entire life. You taught your kids how to talk, walk, colors, shapes, counting, ABC’s, the list goes on and on. Why wouldn’t you be able to add a little more formal, academic structure to part of your teaching life?
- What if your child has special needs? Unfortunately, in the United States the majority of public schools do not and cannot meet the needs of all special needs students in their care. Also, there are many learning disabilities that public schools don’t recognize and they will not successfully help those students. Due to these circumstances, many students fall through the cracks. If you have a student will any kind of special need, you have the ability and deep interest to help your child succeed as much as possible. Especially in this case, your child needs you.
- You can include good morals and your values in your homeschool. Good morals, manners, and truth are lacking in our culture today. Much of this is due to these virtues no longer being taught in many homes, nor reinforced in public schools. You are able to concretely teach and reinforce these lessons for your family. These lessons can be taught through chosen curriculum, some have manners, morals, and virtue in lower grade curriculum, but can also be found within Christian curriculum as well. Having a curriculum with both aspects make for a well-rounded foundation for good morals throughout life.
- You get individual time with your children. Homeschooling gives you much more time with your children than if they went to school outside the home. Yes, there is much more teaching time when you homeschool, but there are many great discussions that take place, and many memories are made. This is time you will never be able to get back and before you know it they will no longer be living in your home and you will have much less time with them.
- You choose your village. When you choose to homeschool, raising kids still takes a village you choose who is in it. When children are sent to school outside of the home you don’t know the majority of the people in your kids village at school. Your children are completely vulnerable and you have to trust that everyone around has their best interest at heart.
- Homeschooling allows for personality development. Sometimes people think homeschooled kids are weird, and that’s kind of true. Every child has a different personality and it can be fostered in the homeschool environment. Public and private schools are meant to make students conform to the norms either in the form of peer pressure (more likely in a public school) or requires uniforms (more likely in private schools) and can have the effect of extinguishing outgoing personalities, or someone’s unique sense of style.
I am sure there are many other great reasons as to why you should homeschool, and I’ll probably write on this topic in the future. I know you can find many more reasons already out there by other authors, as well. Whatever you choose to do with your own kids always know that you know what’s best for your children, and you can do it, even if you think you can’t.
